FAQs

What is Caritas?

Caritas means charity or love. It is the Church’s mission of love in action, serving the poor and promoting justice. Pope Francis reminds us: “A Church without charity does not exist.”

Caritas Malaysia is the official social mission arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia (CBCM). We bring together nine diocesan Caritas offices, religious congregations, and partners to serve the poor, care for creation, and promote human dignity nationwide.

Some dioceses already have Caritas or human development offices. Others are setting them up with support from the national office. Together, we form one network that shares resources, learning, and mission.

The national office coordinates programmes across dioceses, provides training, and responds to emergencies. It also represents the Malaysian Church in advocacy, partnerships, and international Caritas work.

Local Caritas offices work directly with communities, guided by their bishop. They identify needs, design programmes, and involve local people in building sustainable solutions.

The national office supports — not controls — local Caritas. It adds value by fostering cooperation, sharing resources, and amplifying the Church’s voice. Local offices remain accountable to their communities and bishops.

We practise accountability through transparency, regular reviews, and annual reports at both diocesan and national levels. We follow international Caritas management standards and commit to good governance, participation, and stewardship.
